The pieces below convey my thoughts on street photography in general, my experiences in particular, and other random notions about the world at large. Hopefully you shall find some wisdom or inspiration within this space, but always remember that these entries are merely MY thoughts.
This is not only an introduction but an overarching disclaimer – art should never be reined in by absolutes or dictated solely by precedent.
When I started taking street photos, I stumbled, fumbled and learned on my own; unaware that the field was even a legitimate oeuvre. Upon discovering that there was a field of preceding “masters”, I still largely avoided their teachings; in part to preserve my vision, and in part because much of the “wisdom” was incompatible crap.
Some insisted on cropping photos to guide the viewer’s eye, others declared one should never do so (only frame the shot in-camera)...some swear that digital shooting is the devil’s work, others see it as the only sane way to shoot the streets....some anoint B/W as the sole approach to capturing grit, others believe desaturating robs a scene of reality....in short when absolute rules stand in absolute contradiction, they do not stand at all.
I constantly alter my approach and employ whatever process best shares the moment with the audience and encourage you to do the same – show them what is in your head by whatever means necessary! I will share practical tips, lessons learned and even strong opinions, but I do not have the answers BECAUSE THERE ARE NONE!
Take what you like from my notions, but disregard or mock as necessary – I’d love to hear back from you or even feature questions/alternate ideas in this space.
