Like so much of Paris, this distinguished gent seems frozen in time as he pedals past the imposing Mairie de la 10eme with a bearing as venerable and solid as the grand building herself.

One moment you’re strolling down a Parisian street, the next you find yourself in a Truffaut film... It’s late afternoon in the 6eme and most restos are shuttered between lunch and dinner when you notice a single sidewalk table occupied by a middle-aged pair locked in deep conversation
Paris | 2016
Withdrawn but bold, she presses through the milling crowd; representing one culture while assimilating to another. Her lips are pursed and eyes steely, but an informative label hovers beyond like a thought bubble revealing her inner determination – "I exist!".
Paris | 2016
These two Parigots share a terrace café table, but little else it seems. There’s an age gap, a fashion gap...she’s smoking, he’s not...she’s drinking he’s not....the body language is frigid and her contemptuous glare deflates his next thought before it’s even uttered. They are an odd pairing whose story is not readily apparent.
There's something gripping in this charged moment where we feel so near the great distance that lies between them, and part of the ever-present passion that is Paris....
Paris | 2016
Disparate components stand in compelling contrast as a striking young woman cut a stylish profile against a backdrop of relaxing rough gents; graffiti and grit accentuating her immaculate appearance and poise.
Paris | 2013
Paris is an international beacon of creative freedom and capital of a bygone colonial empire, and thus a magnet for émigrés the world over...but not all assimilate with ease.
This stoic woman staring out a 6eme window is of Asian heritage, but the architecture and attitude of the world reflected back is far from her ancestral home. She's a fish not only out of native waters, but caught in a bowl in the midst of a mysterious foreign landscape.

Find a boy
unafraid
to ask directions
but never let him drive.

Through rising clouds of savory steam, our modern Mona Lisa projects the bearing of a performer, the composure of a librarian, and a mysterious far-away look that mirrors her famous cousin lurking in the background...all the while reminding us that if there’s anything more Parisian than crepes, it is poise.
Paris | 2016
Patrolling the Marais armed with credit cards în lieu of claws, Bobo Wolverine seems both tough and toothless; another allegory for this complex town comprised of so many layers.
Paris | 2016
A classic Parisian cafe moment filled with intriguing characters on two legs and four. Distressed wood, a distressed relationship, and a man's best friend all make this a memorable scene.
Paris | 2015
In the late 19th century, Montmartre thrived as a creative enclave where some of history’s greatest artists assembled on the infamous hill and painted ladies. These days the masters are gone, but you can still find painted ladies.

Rain drops may find the nerve to fall on this grand dame de Paris, but they shall never dampen her nobility.
Paris | 2016
Sipping wine, smoking a cigarette, and soaking in the sun beneath a chapeau and debonair neckerchief, this stately gent invites us to kiss his ring, take a seat, and learn about the world. Oh the stories he could tell...

Reflective conversations in the Paris sun

Laissez-faire, defined.

Your joy may vary...
Paris | 2017
An unremarkable scene from an ordinary weekday that extraordinarily encapsulates the afternoon feel of a Paris neighborhood café. It's a frozen glimpse of lethargy that somehow feels kinetic; beckoning us tojoin the cozy, convoluted tableau where subtle contrasts abound.
Paris | 2012
Unlike Doisneau’s infamously staged scene of yore, this enraptured couple united authentically in front of the Hôtel de Ville in a scene so moving, passionate, and public that preserving it felt more an act of admiration than voyeurism.
Paris | 2016
A light rain in Goutte d'Or sent street vendors scampering for shelter, where this woman's perch produced a peculiar portrait which drew my eye.
Paris | 2011
Paris is a vibrant town always on the move; the flow of humanity, commerce and creativity does not abide the conventional rules of "office hours". At any time of day, the Metro is busy, the sidewalks are buzzing, the parks are full and energy is in the air. Sometimes, though, one feels they are coming whilst the rest of the world is going.
Paris | 2013
Ships may pass silently in the proverbial night, but by day the streets of Paris offer a cacophonous torrent of random interludes, magical micro-interactions, and engaging stories in motion.
Paris | 2014
This chouette family grabbed the eye as the young Ramones fan and his hip dad stared into the distance while their youngest charge slumbered in the spring sun. One’s a punk and one’s punked-out, but together they comprise a striking scene of fashion, family and fatigue in the heart of the Marais.
Paris | 2015
Visitors to Paris marvel at the number of sidewalk cafes and revel in observing the people and culture amassed on terraces throughout the city...but don't forget that they're watching you too! Smoking, drinking, chatting and people-watching from a sidewalk seat are facets of Parisian life so timeless that this image of Parigots caught in the act could easily be from 2015 or 1975. Haute couture's transitory trends may issue forth from this town, but core traditions and values here remain unyielding.
Paris | 2012
A colorful Bobo savors the season’s first glace and the day’s last light in a private pool of sunshine that separates her from the crowd of Place Bastille. Her suggestive pose, vibrant outfit, contemplative expression and isolated nature render the scene ambiguous: is it sassy, sensual, sweet, sad...? I’ll leave the interpretation to your beholding eye, while I envy all who possess youth, spirit, iced cream, and a spot in the Parisian sun.
Paris | 2015
Like American hipsters, a certain strata of Paris' youth is pretentious, trendy and subsidized...but here the disciples are known as “BoBo”s. A contraction of “BOurgeois BOhemme”, the derisive title implies an affluent affectation of gritty artistic integrity rather than a genuine lifestyle. And they're everywhere.
Then again, if you’re going to pretend to be poor, disaffected and visionary, where better than Paris?

I remember father's presence
and protective arms
around me
Subtly steering childhood
around the demons of his past
Paris | 2013
When a wide-eyed young woman emerged from the Metro in a slightly dodgy part of Paris’ 9th, burdened by a giant backpack and an obvious sense of trepidation my eye was caught by her beauty, but my heart was touched by her vulnerability.
Dragueurs seemed to circle in a pattern mimicking the wind-swirled trash that similarly cluttered the walkways as she desperately re-checked her phone, oblivious to any specific threat but mindful of being out of her element. I put down my lens but maintained a protective eye as she scanned the unfamiliar environs for a familiar face and finally found her local friend, instantly transforming the atmosphere from angst to joy. Such is the tempestuous power of Paris.

Aux Folies is a buzzing café energized by the diversity of Belleville...yet despite its inclusive nature, not everyone is ensconced in the fun.
Paris | 2014
Practical considerations do not factor in the equation when a true Parisienne assembles her ensemble; la mode est tout! Not even riding a bike interferes with fashionable flair in the couture capital, as demonstrated by this heroicaly chic commuter near Place de La Republique.
Paris | 2014
Not-so-friendly faces looking for business on the streets of the Right Bank.
Paris | 2017
A sketchpad, a cup of wine, a cigarette, and a front-row seat down a busy Parisian boulevard is the stuff that masterpieces are made of.
Paris | 2011
At a table set for one (but perhaps expecting two), this Parisian fille seems lost in thought and a cloud of exhaled tobacco. The impurities in the air are magnified by the plastic tarp that kept outdoor patrons warm on this chilly spring day, and added a dream-like haze to the candid scene.
Paris | 2014
Glamorous Left Bank cafés feature attentive waiters, a social buzz and tables full of beautiful people on display...but head to quieter quartiers and the terrace vibe becomes charmingly more blasé.
Paris | 2017
From a hole in Montmartre springs a geyser of gloom in the form of Parisian commuters.
Stiff postures, grim faces, detachment from joy, they exit the mine in a zombie parade -- a group desperately in need of vibrance, yet indifferent to the floral salvation at hand.
Paris | 2013
Ma chère soeur, there only ever was one man who could come between us...
Paris 2016
The Birdman of Pompidou is a Beaubourg fixture; regularly found meditating amongst his feathered friends, seemingly lost in his own world - which happens to exist in the midst of thousands of pedestrians in this heavily-trafficked tourist zone of the 4eme.
Paris | 2015
Authentic Asian noodles prove an exotic treat to lunching Parisians, but simply supply sustenance for this server stealing a behind-the-scenes moment after the midday rush.
Paris | 2016
Comfortably reclining between his earthly possessions and an oddly elegant mural, our subject eschews the surrounding world while staying abreast of its developments.
Paris | 2015
Even when it rains Parisian mothers stoicly retain their elegance and sense of style, mais les enfants....well, children are children the world over. Thank goodness.
Paris | 2013
A chess match in the park is no rare sight, but when the battle is conducted in the middle of a tranquil square on a graffiti-covered bench with disparate-but-dignified combatants too focused on their pieces to note a snapping shutter near-at-hand...well that's pretty interesting.
Paris | 2017
Under chilly spring skies an intense liseuse anchors a sepia moment that screams Paris in details both sensed and seen.
Which element most evokes the City of Light: the classic café environs, the fracophonic signage, or the fact that our subject is not only reading...but reading an actual published work...on paper?
Paris | 2017
If neighborhoods live long enough they tend to hit hard times...luck and luster fade, leaving glints of past vitality sprinkled amidst the ruins.
The same is true of men.
Paris | 2017
Like the last Sikh Lion from a long-forgotten war, he honorably mans his post...with a hand cart not a rifle.
Paris | 2017
A passing Parisian storm soaked the sidewalks and drove most to their parapluies...but not this bold lass who let music be her umbrella as she stylishly splashed along the rue; her fiery spirit (and mane) lending much-needed color to an otherwise grey day.
Paris | 2017
This image evokes 1970s Beirut more than 2017 Belleville, yet it’s 5 minutes à pied from a dazzling vantage point above the industrial Eiffel Tower, a waterfall in bucolic Buttes Chaumont, a neo-gothic house of worship at Place Jourdain, or the blue-collar birthplace of chanteuse Edith Piaf...all orbiting one anonymous spot amongst millions in this sprawling marvel.
To me the city is a miracle.
To these weary gents it is home.
And that’s what makes it perfect.
Paris | 2017
- What’s that?
- A Google alert - I set it for fashion updates.
- Great idea! What’s the news?
- Mon dieu! Long slicked-back hair....it’s...it’s démodé!
- NOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!
Paris | 2016
If Nero fiddled while Rome burned, it's only fitting that accordions fill the air as Paris sinks.
