Never cycle in a dress,
they told me
For all the world
might glimpse your pussy.
I say, let them.

"Its not you, it's me" - is that what you want to hear?
It's you.

Some of Paris’ most glamorous images are staged scenes of beautiful models absorbing magical views through open windows. Some of her most evocative shots capture ordinary café moments from everyday city life. This photo is both, and neither.

Street photography is an exploration of universal empathy that preserves slices of contemporary life for the ages. Shooting in Paris adds the ability to juxtapose modernity against antiquity, creating images that are simultaneously of-our-time and timeless...though often the lines are blurred.
This subject’s bearing, bow-tie, bicycle, and beret so seamlessly suited the classic Haute Marais that I swear the scene was black-and-white even in real time.

At the end of a busy market day on Fauborg du Saint Denis the locals head home and abandon the rough rue to its evening inhabitants: young socialites who come in droves to revel in the "chic" gritty environs they believe imbue a patina of blue collar authenticity.
With expressions that display both wariness and feigned-confidence they strut in style past an abandoned building with a quickened pace towards the next watering hole where they will again be in their element.

It’s early evening and shadows grow long across Paris’ blue-collar Menilmontant neighborhood. This transitional time imparts an unsteady rhythm to the street; cafés fill with relaxing revelers, métro stations surge with buttoned-up commuters, and shops buzz with energetic families provisioning for the evening meal...yet the chaos is painted with a gorgeous light that freezes a moment of tranquility for one woman alone with her thoughts, two wheels, and the city.

If you want to teach your kids that smoking isn't cool,
never take them to Paris.

You're in Paris with caffeine, tobacco, sunshine and love -- what more could you ask?
OK...maybe some wine.
And chocolate.
And bread.
And some iced cream.
Perhaps, I understand the frown.

A self-assured madame held the upper hand in a heated discussion that the monsieur was not quite ready to concede, but which their furry friend had already tuned-out as he looked to me for rescue. It’s not easy being in the middle.

A steady rain kept most shoppers at bay, but lent a picturesque sheen to the cobblestones without dampening this young boy's spirit. We can all identify with the carefree joy as he splashes beneath the impervious shelter supplied by an umbrella and a father’s love.

As the work day ends and metro lines restore weary commuters back from whence they came, the streets of Goutte d'Or transfrom into an impromptu market of African fare fit for the evening's feast.
Paris | 2016
La Parisienne moderne is irrepressibly powerful and practical; inclement weather nary enough to impact her style or appointed rounds. When afternoon rains slicken the streets, simply add a jacket to your ensemble and pedal on in your high-heeled boots: formidable, beautiful, undeterred.

Paris | 2012
A market girl and her striking Gallic features are visible through the slats of a pallet as she dons her gloves and gets to work without sparing a thought to vanity; the dichotomy of natural beauty and laborer ethics making her all-the-more alluring.
Paris | 2015
Famous for its central Marais location and its battling falafel joints, Rue des Rosiers teems with character, characters...and chick peas. Here a young couple sport a look that's caught somewhere between goth and gangster, but somehow fits amongst the diversity and antiquity that are the Marais.
Paris | 2016
Individuals from every community share hectic Metro tunnels, though rarely mingle within them: Parisians are a friendly lot but tend to shun uninvited interaction -- or even eye contact -- in public. Who knows what lives and loves have gone wanting due to this inhibiting decorum?
Paris | 2016
Théâtres Guignol have occupied a niche in French culture since the Revolutionary Era and somehow manage to enthrall children to this day. In an age when video games and portable screens hold hypnotic sway over young eyeballs, les enfants de Paris still queue up for marionette spectacles in parcs around the city or in traveling performances which rotate through the neighborhoods.
This particular show was dark for the day, but a couple of youngsters couldn't resist the temptation to peer inside the magical tent...after all, the flap does read "ENTRÉE"!

Cent-Quatre has no Michelin stars and very few tourists, but an amazing energy, mission and history. A behemoth building constructed in the 19th century in the 19eme to house municipal undertaker services, it was recently reborn as a 400,000 square-foot cultural center where artists and the public commingle in an infectiously creative atmosphere.
Here a group of dancers perfect their routine outside building but inside the iron gate that marks the boundary between the surrounding blue-collar neighborhood and the magic enclave of imagination within.

Behold.
I am the future.
Trampling history in sweet heels.
Paris | 2011
Cloaked in the unfashionably simple male regalia of his faith this gentleman minds a pram while licking the windows in the trendy-but-graffiti-tinged neighborhood. We know not what he spies in the pane, but we find a second version of him looking back and wonder which side of the divide is the truer reflection?
Paris | 2011
Rue de Buci is a charming street in Paris’ 6eme, comfortably nestled between Saint Germain de Pres and the Seine. It’s lined with cafes, packed with tourists and closed to all but pedestrians...unless, of course, you’re a local.

Feet sore from a long day of marching with the cause, she relaxes on a park bench only to have a patriarchal neighbor generously mansplain the finer points of modern feminism.

Savory sentinel
mans his post,
awaiting your desire.
Rising heat,
dormant ladle;
pleasure unassembled.
On demand
he comes to life,
artistry kinetic.
Liquid canvas find its shape,
painted lovely shades of flavor
salty,
sweet,
butter-drenched;
orgasms forged in flour.
Walk away.
Enjoy your treat.
Once more, he’s at attention.

Her resigned demeanor matches the drab environment yet her outfit lends a surprising dash of color; are the hues an incidental quirk of a scavenged ensemble or the defiant flourish of an inner spark clawing back at a difficult life?

When I'm finished,
I flick you away;
a dying ember
your last trace.
I do this also
with cigarettes.

A curious carrot-top peeks into one of the many hidden courtyards of Paris.

In an exterior passageway beneath and between galleries of the Palais de Louvre, an absorbed artist and passing pedestrians are connected only by the notes that fill the air, and the coins that don’t quite fill his hat.
Paris | 2015
To escape the malaise of the world you might head to Paris...to escape the problems of Paris you might head to the Tuileries...to escape the crowds of the Tuileries you might seek a secluded spot....to escape your thoughts you might delve into a good book.
It’s there you find bliss; bathed in autumn’s golden light, carpeted by the season’s foliage, and captured in this moment.
Paris | 2014
In this shuttered doorway on a shaded street in the 10eme a group of children line-up in hiding while a playful adult "unsuccessfully" seeks his giggling quarry. The smiles are infectious, the air is not only warm but joyful, and spring has finally taken root in Paris.
Paris | 2016
He was parked outside outside the Iguana Café - apropos for an interesting, keen-eyed, leathery specimen largely blending into the surroundings he so coolly surveyed. Far more than a reptile, he resembled the city itself: an ancient, distinguished, implacable exterior warmed by a spirit still burning within, silently watching another generation spring from soil that has nurtured so many ages.
Paris | 2012
As the echoes of gatherings cascaded from open windows above, our subject stole a moment for himself to soak in the Rue des Rosiers, looking dapper and retro-cool in his traditional Orthodox apparel; hanging in one world while dressed for another.
Paris | 2016
Even after a thousand Métro journeys I find each trip an adventure, but most commuters just plug in their ear buds, detach their sentience, and tune out the fascinating subterranean world...don’t they know what they’re missing?
Paris | 2015
An attractive couple share an intense conversation and a bit of street food while sheltered against a shuttered storefront in Paris’ upcoming Haut-Marais neighborhood before hopping their motorcycle and speeding away in a blur of leather chic.
Paris | 2014
As the center of the haute couture universe, Paris supplies endless style options for her fashion-conscious citizens: animal prints, bright colors, mesmerizing patterns, infinite layers, and eye-catching coiffures to complete any ensemble....but that doesn’t mean they should all be worn together.
Paris | 2016
The hair, makeup, outfit and accessories are perfect and you've scored an outdoor table at the chosen SoPi café...but he's nowhere to be found.
Paris | 2014
Her fierce elegance stood in stark relief against the shuffling crowd while her fashion flair and teased-out hair contrasted the repeating docile lines of the aged architecture. Such presence and aesthetics drew my eye and made her the undeniable focus of this street scene, yet her gaze seemed oddly detached from everything around her.
Paris | 2016
The magic of Paris' Place Contrescarpe was not lost on Ernest Hemingway when he penned “A Moveable Feast” in an apartment just around the corner, and the square’s cafes continue to charm tourists to this day...but not these biddies. A classic setting and some classic facial expressions.
Paris | 2013
As a traditional rallying point in a fierce democracy, Place de la République serves an important role in remembering the dead and campaigning for the living...but the idealist in me wishes for a world with more giggling children and less grief-and-grievances.

Man may have forged the Eiffel Tower using iron and brawn, but we make it look goooood.

I'll have two scoops of chocolate...

The sidewalks of Paris are not all about romance, seduction and drama...they also flow with family life. You know – the inevitable result of so much romance, seduction and drama...
Paris | 2015
Massive wooden doors, an aged stone facade, and classic street signage all scream Paris, but not nearly so clearly as the look and persona of the gent standing out front.
Am I watching a 1960s film, or walking down my street...sometimes it's hard to tell....sometimes it doesn't matter.
Paris | 2017
Golden light casts long shadows and bathes Beaubourg in rich tones, but also brings sad tidings of her last sunset in Paris.
With a bag full of gifts, a phone full of images, and a heart full of memories she soaks up the city's waning glow while reflecting on that magic week when she truly was a Parisienne.
Paris | 2012
If the atmosphere wasn't enough to let you know where this moment was captured, the newsstands' postcards conveniently disclose the fact.

‘Meet me at the street fest near Cluny’
‘But it’s raining’
‘Then meet me under my umbrella near Cluny’
‘Is it big enough for two?’
‘Not really’
‘Be right there’
There is no force in nature that can dampen the romance of Paris.
Paris | 2014
His colorful drinks were outshone by his eye-catching outfit which paled next to the vibrance of the neighborhood...but for all the hues that enlivened his orbit, the man never displayed much vitality.
Paris | 2014
This adorable daughter bravely accepted papa's precarious ride, but can barely disguise the fear evidenced in a tight grip and taut expression.
Paris | 2014
There was something about the multi-layered linear geometry of this scene that grabbed me: the blocks of the building, the bars of the fence, and the ramrod pseudo-goosestep of our strolling smoker across the squared sidewalk all supplied impressive symmetrical harshness (undermined, of course, by the kitty-cat tote bag).
Paris | 2017
This can be a daunting neighborhood for a young woman alone, so stay poised, exude calm, and always appear to be expecting friends. Of course for a real Parisienne, the first law of the urban jungle is to stay chic even when focused on survival.
Parisians’ appetite for life and passionate communication compel a perpetual juggling act where eating, drinking, smoking, and conversational punctuation must all be managed with two hands. It’s no easy task, but a survival skill for these streets; one a true Parigot handles with grace and aplomb.
